Dead Line Passes: Outcome – Fantastic!

DERS fans REJOICE! The surgical operation to remove the malignant cancer, that is chris simon, was a complete success. I am simply flabbergasted at the fact that not only a team was interested in acquiring this disgrace, but that they were willing to give something up for him in return. I was prepared to offer him and a few million dollars to any team willing to take this {expletive deleted}, but I digress.

It was not a great day of movement for the DERS but it was good. Simply the departure of simon made this transfer season a successful one, however there were more managerial maneuvers made by the DERS in an attempt to facilitate in the rebuilding of the great dynasty.

Looking at the moves that were made, I feel that we are at least attempting to make strides in the right direction. With the acquisition of Rob Davison and departure of simon and M.A.B. we have really bolstered up our defensive ability. We lost a defensive liability and gained something the team desperately needed: a defensive defenseman, who is not injured.

Also the addition of the third and sixth round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft is a nice bonus that can really only help the DERS. Many people may say “Its a third and sixth round pick, who cares?” All I have to say to that; Henrik Zetterberg – seventh round.

Although no big deals were made, like trading Satan or even TANK, I am still happy that we purged ourselves of that abomination. With that trade alone I no longer care about the fact that we will lose to Ottawa in the first round of the playoffs this year.

DERS Haiku's

Too many, these men are mere mortals; however to the few dedicated followers they are gods. They hold the power over not only the team but the destiny and lives of the pawns they control. On the verge of Tuesday’s 3 pm trade deadline, these demigods are put to the test. Pressure builds, minds race, the future hangs in the balance of their decisions. Whether or not they should pull that hypothetical trigger and make that blockbuster deal that could either solidify an already stellar lineup or perhaps provide the team with the essential building blocks for the future is something that only these select few have been designated to make.

As I type, there are hundreds, literally hundreds, of people across the World Wide Web putting in their two cents, on their own blogs and websites, about what there favorite teams should do. However this posting will not be one of those, it is however like many of my writings, poetry.

For those uneducated readers out there I have two things to say. First why are you here? I will do you a favor and direct you to something more appropriate, Click this and get out. Second these poems are called Haiku’s. I hope you enjoy.

Hunted Down

Early on Friday morning Garth Snow was silently stalking his prey. He target – a 6-foot-3 210 lbs. winger who doesn’t fear digging in the corners; a very impressive endeavor for even the most seasoned General Managers.

The scene was set; Garth had positioned himself perfectly on the grassy knoll over looking DERS Country. Armed with a $10 million dollar cap space and an owner willing to spend money to make money, Garth took aim with a steady hand. His pulse never rising and his vision never fading Garth squeeze the trigger.

BANG!

Disrupting the peaceful silence surrounding DERS Country, Garth had found his target.

I haven't been able to write due to my prior educational commitments, I will hopefully be able to write more in the next few days.

Mediocrity Dead Ahead

Over the past few games I have, once again, gotten very excited about DERS hockey. I mean that THE DERS are finally back to winning games. However, this probably short-lived jubilation is met with mental desolation.

We are once again caught in the whirlwind that is mediocrity. We have been stuck in this pattern for the past decade. We go on a solid winning streak, winning 6 or 7 out of 9, only to be matched by a greater losing streak of something like 3 for the next 15. It is a pattern that one must get used to as a DERS fan.

I hate to be a Negative Nancy but THE DERS have to stop this. I hate being good enough to be 9th or 10th in the conference or just barely make it into the playoffs only to be eliminated in the 1st round. A change is needed. And the only thing I think that can really get us in the right direction is to have a high draft pick for the next few years.

Let me probe your mind and inquire about your opinion. Would you rather be 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th for the next 5 to seven years or would you rather finish last for the next few years and draft young goal scores. And in the process build around a few young guns and solid veterans and potentially advance past the first round of the playoffs.

With next years draft packed with potential offensive talent like Steven Stamkos, Nikita Filatov, Evgeny Grachev (along with other like Mattias Tedenby Kyle Beach, Anton Gustafsson Dmitri Kugryshev, Viktor Tikhonov, Colin Wilson, Cody Hodgson) and next years draft being lead by John Tavares and Magnus Pääjärvi, I think that we could finally find that 40 plus goal scorer somewhere in the next two years that THE DERS are desperately in need of.

But back on to the current DERS.

They are once again winning, and you want to know why? I know why, they are they are playing the only way that will allow them to win, by doing two things. First they are finally shooting, and shooting a lot. Its my personal motto “If you shoot 50 times your bound to get something in.” And also they are placing our big guys in front of the net. Just look at TANK, he has 4 goals 1 assist on 11shot and is a plus 1. Why, because he has his 6 foot 2, 195 lbs, ass in front of the net. THE DERS are just a big group of goofy goons who will pretty much only score the garbage goals, but hey they are still goals.

Yea H. Duff may be able to squeeze through the defense and make a fancy play but guys like TANK are not all that agile and will only succeed in front of the net.

But there winning and I’m just rambling. I just hope that if they are going to win they better win in the post season, and not finish in the middle of the league. I hate being marginal.

THIS TIME WE HAVE TOOLS TO WORK WITH

At this point in the season I feel that were at the point of no return. The way we have been playing is appalling. It is pretty clear to me that THE DERS are going to be sellers at the deadline. You can trust me on this one, I know markets; I have a business degree. That being said, I shall now use all my business skills to discuss and inform you, the reader, about the islanders potential trade deadline situation.

We have a lot of potential tools that are in their last year of their contracts and will unlikely sign back with us next year. And another plus, some are in high demand at this point of the season.

I think that we could get a few decent trades and pick up a lot of good tools, but this is something I will talk about at another date. Right now I want to talk about who we can trade, not what we can get.

I will separate the team into groups, the breakdown I shall be using is

THE DERS willingness to trade / other teams desire and potential interest

YES / YES

Each player in this cluster has there own assets that they can bring to a potential playoff team and help them succeed. These players have, not only, a talent that teams are interested but also could play out to be the keys to rebuilding THE DERS to their rightful glory.

H. Duff

He has 1,560 minutes left in a DERS uniform until he gets to graze the green green pastures of unrestricted free agency. He has accomplished exactly what he planned on before signing with THE DERS, that is sign with a team that he can showcase his ability to be a top liner then get the hell off that sinking ship and make lots of money in the process. Do I want him to stay? Of course I feel that he is a great player but if we do not trade him by the deadline I will be shocked, unless he signs a long term deal.

Satan

This guy is like Special Agent Booth, David Boreanaz’s character in the fox hit BONES, a former sniper. That’s not to say that he is no longer good, he can still “ripple the mess”. (if anyone gets that reference I will be impressed) I just feel that he would be more productive on a different team. Yet once again I would like to keep him unless we get something good in return. He too is in his walk year, which only makes him more likely to be traded.

Hunter

This guy is a big winger who can truly play in almost any situation. I think this is a guy that many teams would be looking to add to their team. He’s smart, physical, comes up big in the right situations and seems like he is a really nice guy; if I was a GM I would want him on my team. Again want to keep him but he is a UFA and we could get something for him.

M.A.B.

Oh Marc, there is so much I would like to say about you, but that is for another time. This small stature defensive liability (who should be a forward but don’t get me started on that) will fit in perfectly with a playoff team looking to boost their PP.

POTENTIALLY / POTENTIALLY

These players are the guys that only a few teams might be interested in to fill a certain niche.

Billy G.

Many teams are looking for veteran who can provide leadership and has playoff experience. Billy is that, he has about a point every two games in the playoffs and is clearly a leader. I think that he could draw some attention at the deadline.

Silly

Like Billy, Silly provides leadership with playoff experience and can win 80% of faceoffs he takes. Lets face it at the trade deadline Silly becomes a hot commodity. I mean he has been traded at the deadline about 5 times in his career. However I would absolutely hate to trade him. Him and Kenny Wu are my two favorite players on the team and I could possibly shed a single tear, like Iron Eyes Cody, if I see either of them go.

POTENTIALLY / AS A SWEETENER OR LOW DRAFT PICK

These guys will only be thrown into a deal if the other team is looking for a young almost ready for the NHLer player or for a low draft pick.

Jackman Walter Johnson

Freddy M. TANK Vasicek

Hillbert

Some of these guys are veterans others are young guys but none are blockbuster trade material. I can see THE DERS parting ways with them but are unlikely, unless for a low draft pick or as part of another deal

NO / YES

These are guys that could get traded if we were buyers at this point and were willing to part ways with some to bring in bigger names.

Tambellini, Bergenheim, Park, Comeau, Colliton, Nielsen, Sutton

Witt, Berard, Martinek, Campoli, Gervais

These guys all range in their talents and overall abilities and each bring a different skill to the table. But I can not see THE DERS trading any of these players at this point in the season. If things were different and we were buyers trying to bring in another Ryan Smyth type player to NVMC, then maybe they could be traded. How ever sadly we are not, so I don’t think they will move.

DOUBTFUL / DOUBTFUL

Bates, DUBBIE

I don’t think neither will be traded. No to bates because he is injured and useless and THE DERS need a back up so DUBBIE is staying put.

YES/NO WAY IN HELL

Simon

Ahhh the inventor of the SIMONIZER - This disgrace should thank what ever god(s) he believes in for the fact that Teddy likes him. If I was running this team he would be out of here in a heartbeat. I mean I LOVE goons, but this guy has serious psychological problems. For is first incident you can feasible cite “concussed”, but for the next unpleasant incident I guess you can cite “Douchbaggery Syndrome”.

HELL NO / WITH OUT A DOUBT

DP

Do I have to go any further? We have him for the next 15 years. He has a life sentence with out the possibility of parole.

4/18/2008

No, I’m not talking about the date that the DERS will be eliminated, yet again, from the playoffs by the Ottawa Senators on a break away goal scored by Randy Robitaille in the third period of game four (calling it). I am talking about the DERS winning only 4 games out of the 18 games they have played so far this year.

I don’t even know where to being.

I guess they are finally playing the way I thought they would before this season started. So I guess I can not be that mad at the current predicament the DERS are in.

But still, would someone light a fire under their asses. I mean I feel like I’m watching a team of Oleg Kvashas and Alexei Yashins slowly skating around the ice, not playing defense and waiting for the puck to get to them so they can get a “scoring chance” only to either lose the puck due to a back checking defenseman or take a shot, from at least 10 feet away, and miss the net completely. It’s pathetic.

The only guys who are truly trying to be productive are the guys who are just happy to be playing at this level. Players like Blake, Tam, and Berge (Comeau, Tambellini and Bergenheim) are playing like they hate Bridgeport. It may not seem this way statistically, but if you watch them play there is something that they have inside that the most of the veterans do not. Even Jackman seems to have that attitude as well. I remember watching a game, I believe it was against the devils, and right off the face off Jackman was just about to drop the gloves with someone and Sutton jumped in and proceeded to get knocked out. For players like Jackman if they want to stay in the NHL they have to drop the gloves and if they don’t their quality of play drops. I mean don’t get me wrong I love to see Andy participate in the only form of legal bare-knuckle boxing in the United States, but that was Jackman’s fight and he was visibly upset he did not get to partake.

Although it is not just the young guys who are giving it their all. Players like Kenny Wu and Silli (Park and Sillinger) are giving 150 percent every shift they take. On a side note: I am so glad that the DERS were able to sign these two players. I think that they are absolutely great players and if they get traded at the deadline I will be as pissed as Carl Brutananadilewski.

Players like Satan and H. Duff (Comrie) seem to only play when there is a chance for them to shine. I mean I like them but they seem to not care as much as they should.

Something needs to be done with this team. I am not sure if a fire sale at the deadline is what we need, but I’m not going to lie, some new young faces in our line up could prove beneficial.

WELCOME TO THE MAN DISADVANTAGE

Welcome to yet an additional online domicile of one of the greatest teams in NHL history. This home is completely different then any other website that centers on the team that dwells inside that glorious stadium that is Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum or NVMC as I like to refer to it as. I will list said differences now:

First we will only refer to the New York Islanders as “THE DERS”. From now on every article that is written here will refer to that New York hockey team who play their games at NVMC as “THE DERS”. (If you wish to participate and aide our attempt to make “THE DERS” a household term, feel free, you have my permission) We will also refer the other, less gifted, New York team as “the gers”. However their abbreviated name shall not be capitalized due to their support of Satan (not Miroslav) and their alternative lifestyle.

Next, this website will be written by myself and a select few of fellow DERs aficionados. Since neither I nor my colleagues have ever written on this “present fad” that is the World Wide Web, this website is automatically unique, and is already, without a post, the best place to get your, up to the minute*, DERs information.

I guess other then these two facts; this will be pretty much the same as the many other blogs written about THE DERS. So, all that being said, I hope that you will enjoy my mostly pessimistic views, ideas and comments regarding the DERS and their current situation.

GO DERS!

* This web site will not be up to the minute due to the writers inability to write every day for the reason that we all have lives and other responsibilities that do not revolve around providing you people with DERS information.
